Non-caloric Artificial Sweeteners, the Microbiome and Glucose Metabolism

Suez et al report systematic high quality studies of non-caloric artificial sweetners (NAS) effects on the microbiome and glucose tolerance. Meticulous studies in mice and link studies in humans suggest that NAS induce impaired glucose tolerance mediated by change in gut bacterial colonization (the microbiome). The authors suggest, therefore, a reassessment of the consumption of NAS.
